San Marino - Italy

A hidden gem to explore...

We travel to San Marino, the third smallest state in Europe after the Vatican and Monaco. It is one of the oldest states since it was founded in 301 by San Marino, it is enclosed in Italy, its inhabitants speak Italian but if you ask them they do not consider themselves Italian and are very proud of their origin.

For us it was part of our trip to Italy when we visited Bologna, we had rented a car and organized a day trip. If you approach it by car, there is no border control and you will find enough parking at the entrance of the city where you can park since its center is pedestrianized and no cars pass.

If you don't have a car you can get to the nearest Italian city Rimini by train and from there you will find a bus that runs continuously to the old town of San Marino.

Basic information
  • Their currency is the Euro

  • Your mobile phone will work like in Italy

  • They accept all credit cards

  • If you have taken your passport with you and want a visa stamp, it costs €5 at the tourist office.

Sights

1)The 3 fortresses - Guaita, Cesta and Montale where they are are all three peaks of Mount Titan where San Marino is located. For the first 2, access is easy and for a small fee you can walk to their Forts and see the amazing view

2) Palazzo Pubblico and Piazza della Liberta, perhaps the most recorded spot in San Marino, you will see people sitting on the large terrace of the square and can't get enough of this endless view... Also here you will find beautiful cafes for one stop!

3) The Basilica of San Marino

4) You will also find many museums scattered around the city (of coins - modern art - wax figures, torture, etc.) most of them we consider to be tourist traps and we do not recommend spending time on them but the choice is yours...

5) To walk through the narrow streets of the city with comfortable shoes and to go back in time to a medieval era... We suggest that you start your walk early in the morning because after 12 you will see many tourists arriving and filling every corner of the city ...

Where to eat?

The prevailing cuisine is, of course, Italian and you will find dozens of restaurants scattered throughout the old town. Most of them are hotel restaurants and while at the entrance you will not see that they have a view, everything changes when you go to the main part where their view is unique. We chose Ristorante Il Beccafico with an amazing view and great vfm food.

Extra tips

Also in San Marino you will find all the products very affordable due to duty free, so if you are thinking of shopping for gifts from Italy it is better to do it here.
