Roadtrip in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Updated: Oct 16, 2022

Mostar - Kravica waterfalls - Počitelj - Vrelo Bune

Following our trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia, it was our turn to take a day trip to Bosnia-Herzegovina. We did it with a Mini group from Dubrovnik via Getyourguide.com (click here) and it lasted 11 hours so we could see as much as we could.

First stop is to cross the border and the necessary control, try to have your excursion leave as early as possible to avoid long delays at the border (ours started at 6:30). After 2 hours of driving we arrived at the historic village of Počitelj which is located on the banks of the Neretva river and its walled core is a protected Bosnia-Herzegovina National museum and open-air museum. The castle with its walls at the top of the hill turned to control the entrance and exit to the river is the main attraction and you can, with a short climb, visit it for free of course.

At a distance of 25 minutes our next stop was at the beautiful ones

Kravica waterfalls (admission €10).

It is an oasis with several waterfalls ending in a calm lake where you can swim if you wish. Around the shores of the lake you will find restaurants as well as small boats that take you for a ride near the waterfalls...

We enjoyed the waterfalls for 1.30 hours and then set course for the spectacular Mostar. The most impressive sight is the bridge over the river Neretva (Stari Most) with the 2 towers at its ends (mostari) from where the city got its name. The bridge, which had been built during Ottoman rule, was destroyed during the Bosnian War by Croats and rebuilt based on the original design in 2004. Since 2005, the bridge has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the wider area around the bridge you will find a very large market with souvenirs and restaurants where several of them have been built amphitheatrically to have a view of the main attraction of the city. We recommend eating at Restoran Labirint where it had amazing views and delicious food at low prices.

Try Dolma, Cufte, Cevapi as well as other traditional dishes with roots in Turkey. At the end of the market you will have the opportunity to see the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque.

Meeting point but also outdoor parking if you travel by car you will find around the Mostar Peace Bell Tower with its bell tower extending to 107m high and visible from all over the city.

If you make the excursion with your own car, we recommend that you visit the picturesque Vrelo Bune at a distance of 20 minutes from Mostar at the source of the Buna River to enjoy the natural scenery...
