Rocchetta Mattei is a fortress located in the northern Apennine Mountains, on a hill in the locality of Savignano in the municipality of Grizzana Morandi, in the Metropolitan City of Bologna. To visit it you have to book an online ticket and it costs €10 including the guided tour. It is about 1 h by car from Bologna.
The fortress is within easy reach of Florence and Bologna and could be a pleasant country excursion. The nearest provincial town to the fortress is Porretta Terme where it is a spa town famous for its hot spring spas and luxury resorts.
We combined it with our trip to Bologna and on our way back we visited the town of Vignola and Modena!!
