Travel to Tallinn at Christmas

Updated: Nov 6, 2022

Christmas shopping in the Baltic Queen

Fairytale Tallinn and in our opinion queen of the Baltic countries. We visited it at the beginning of December where there was a strong Christmas atmosphere with an amazing market in the center of the old town. The Old Town is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and not unjustly since its medieval character is so well preserved that you think you are in a 13th century fairy tale. Also the food in this city we consider to be amazing wherever we sat as well as in the open canteens. Worth to see:

What you should visit:

1) Tower Kiek in de Kök

2) Toompea Castle

3) The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky

4) The Viru Gate entrance gate

5) DEPOO market place

6) Kadriorg Park

7) Eat at the Olde Hansa restaurant

EXTRA TIPS:
Tallinn is a small city and we would say that 3 days are enough to explore it, because at this time there is no direct flight, we suggest you to combine it with another city. It has a connection with many European cities at a cost of less than €30, we would recommend it in winter with Vienna or Stockholm.
You could also combine all 3 countries in one trip since they are in close proximity (Lithuania-Latvia-Estonia). You will find a direct flight to Riga and some months also to Vilnius.

To transfer from the airport to the old town you will find 3 options

  • Tram line no. 4

  • Bus No. 2 & 65, you can also get tickets from the driver

  • Taxi, with a cost of around 10€

The currency is the Euro and Roaming is free since it is in the EU.

We stayed: L'Ermitage Hotel, Tallinn which was excellent!

(The hotels outside the old town are very cheap but inside the old town are unique!!)
