Dubrovnik- Croatia

Updated: Sep 30, 2022

We travel to medieval Dubrovnik, Croatia

  • A few words to begin with...

We flew from Athens with a direct flight of Volotea to Dubrovnik (you will find it available also from Aegean) and stayed for 4 days. We had organized from earlier on the 2nd and 3rd day to do one-day trips to get to know Bosnia and Montenegro... The rest of the days we toured the narrows of the old town and got to know the Elafiti Islands which are close to Dubrovnik. We didn't rent a car and we traveled by local buses - ferry - Uber...

Dubrovnik

We landed at the international airport of Dubrovnik and before the exit we would find a kiosk of the company Platanus bus where it has a shuttle bus to the old town of Dubrovnik. The finish is at Ploce Gate and we booked return tickets. Caution!!! The stop to return to the airport is outside the cable car station (click here) and has specific routes that change according to the flights and you can find them by clicking here. The cost is 65kn and return 90kn

Next stop was to check in at the apartment we had booked which was located 5 minutes outside the central Pile Gate and we have to say that it was the most value for money choice we could make. The cost is economical (€75/double room), fully equipped, spotlessly clean and with wonderful owners who gave us all the tips to get to know the city better (If you want to see our hotel, click here)

We spent the whole day inside and outside the city walls and its most important attractions are:

  • St. Blaise's Church & Katedrala Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije

  • Jesuit Stairs (also known from Game of Thrones) at their end end at Plaza Del Mercado where every morning there is a market and many cafes and restaurants

  • The old port, where you can walk around the walls parallel to the sea

  • Wander through the countless narrow streets of the medieval-looking old town

  • Climb the walls and walk around them (Pile gate entrance, cost 150kn)

  • Walk to Dubrovnik West Harbor outside the walls and up the hill to Lovrijenac where it ends at the beautiful beach Šulić

  • Climb to the highest place Dubrava Observation Point to see the panoramic view. You have 3 options for free from the Staza Prema Utvrdi Imperial path (1 hour difficult climb, you need good shoes because there are many stones but the view is wonderful), with the Cable car cost 200kn/round or 110kn/single or by taxi-uber with cost about 16€. We suggest going up the easy way and going down the path you shouldn't miss. Ideal time near sunset but beware the path is not lit at night.

  • If you are a fan of Game of thrones you will find many activities around the movie

  • If you want to go to one of the Elafiti islands you will have to take a Ferry (€4/single) from its main port in Lapad where depending on the month you will find the routes here.

Food in Dubrovnik

Food in all of Dubrovnik is quite expensive, especially in the old town where you will mostly find very nice restaurants. The food you will find will be pizza - pasta - rissoti and fresh fish and seafood (costs start at €60 for 2 dishes, 1 salad and 2 glasses of wine). You won't find global food chains and the only fast food is Tuttobenne where it serves gyros in a pie (€9.50) and large pieces of pizza in hand.

You will find bakeries with very tasty bureks and pies as well as several shops to buy your favorite ice cream!!

We recommend:

  • Pizzeria Castro, amazing pizza

  • Spaghetteria Toni, for the best pasta in town as the locals say

  • Konoba Jezuite, restaurant with the most beautiful courtyard

  • Peppino's Ice Cream, for us the best ice cream in town

  • Taj Mahal Old Town to eat our favorite cevapi and meat dishes

  • Buža Bar & Cave Bar More for drinks and cocktails
